New Bern Alderman Victor Taylor received a voicemail this week in which he was called the n-word and, Taylor believes, was threatened.
“Hello n-----,” the voicemail begins.
“You might be an alderman now, but you won't be an alderman (inaudible) long.”
The caller then hung up the phone.
“I take it as a threat,” Taylor said.
Taylor said he received the message sometime between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday.
His phone was off, so a caller ID number was not available.
The second-ward alderman is running for re-election in October.
Taylor filed a report and police are investigating, according to New Bern Police spokesperson Lieutenant Ronda Allen.
Taylor said he received offensive phone calls several years ago from a man in Newport; that person was warned and stopped calling, Taylor said.
Before this voicemail, Taylor had never been called the n-word.
He has no idea who left the message, he said.
