EASTERN N.C. -

Winter comes howling in.

Thursday night felt more like a mid-summer's evening than the last night of autumn, but here in eastern Carolina the weather can change fast.

Winter officially begins at 6:21 this morning. Ironically, that is about when the surge of chilly weather will make its move.

Cold air will rush into the region today dropping temps and scouring out humidity. All this cold air has helped to generate fast winds. So, our chilly near-50 degree day will feel more like the low 40's once the wind is factored in.

Expect winds to be a big deal today, especially in the early morning hours. Already there have been gusts measured of close to 50 mph by Emerald Isle, and 40 mph across Beaufort, Pamlico, Craven, Carteret, Duplin, Onslow, and Wayne Counties. As the day goes on, gusts will lessen, but a brisk northwesterly wind will continue, clocking in at 15-20 mph.
