Wildfire burns almost 700 acres in Croatan National Forest
A wildfire has burned 697 acres in the Croatan National Forest since Friday night, according to forest service officials.
The fire started in the Pettiford Creek area near Highway 24 and 58. It started at around 6:00 p.m.
“This has nothing to do with [a] control burn,” said James Cherry with the US Forest Service. “This is a fire that's under investigation. At this time we don’t know how it started.”
Firefighters are calling the fire the Woodpecker Fire since it is happening near trees inhabited by a species of woodpecker.
20 fire fighters are working to put out the blaze. It is 60 percent contained.
