Sure the past few days have been in the 50's, but those temperatures are pretty normal for early January. Something equally as normal is a January warm-up.
The past three years for example, have all had a good dose of early-winter warmth.
In 2012, a week of upper 60's and low 70's landed on January 21st through the 27th. In 2011 a string of three days mid-January kicked highs up to 74°. In 2010, the 60's and 70's fell around January, 10th through the 17th.
Starting early next week, a high pressure system will put the lock-down on east coast weather. This area of high pressure will be so strong and broad that it will steer a few storm systems well north of the Carolinas and steadily pump in much warmer air.
Sunshine is in the forecast along with the warmer-air train. Extra rays of sun mixed with the warm air should be strong enough to boost us into the upper 60's by the time we get to the weekend. The normal highs for this time of year? Right around 54°.
