State troopers have identified the man who died in a Friday night tractor trailer accident.
43-year-old Jimmy Ray Smith died when his tractor trailer full of turkeys overturned on Garner Chapel Road near Bethel Church Road. Troopers said speed was a factor in the crash when the truck flipped going around a corner.
Troopers estimated there were 1,000 birds on the trailer, half of which died.
It took until 5:30 a.m. to clean up the accident.
A tractor-trailer overturned in Mt. Olive, killing the driver and many of the turkeys the truck was carrying, the Highway Patrol said.
The tractor-trailer was traveling on Garner Chapel Road, near the intersection of Bethel Church Road Friday at about 9:11 p.m., when it overturned, said Trooper Curtis Tripp. The wreck killed the driver and at least half the turkeys that were in the truck.
Garner Chapel Road, between the intersection of Willie Best Road and Bethel Church Road, was shut down as crews worked to clean up the scene. Trooper Tripp said the road would be closed for several hours.
The identity of the driver killed was not released, pending the notification of family, Trooper Tripp said.
The driver was likely driving too fast through a curve when the tractor-trailer overturned, said Trooper Tripp. An autopsy would be performed to determine if a medical condition played a role.
No other vehicle was involved in the wreck, said Trooper Tripp. No one else was injured.
