United Way hosts volunteer fair

Volunteer Onslow shows community opportunities to give back

POSTED: 7:21 PM Jan 21 2013

Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and what better way to honor a day of service than looking for volunteer opportunities.

Onslow County United Way sponsored an event for local nonprofits to showcase their volunteer opportunities.

Twenty-four nonprofits set up booths in the Jacksonville Recreational Center to show the county that anyone can give back.

Volunteer Onslow Director Lauren Welch says about 300 people stopped by throughout the day. She says whether people work full time, are a student, or are retired, there's an opportunity out there for everyone.

The event helped many nonprofits connect and get the word out about United Way's Day of Action on April 20, where members of the community will gather to perform various service projects in the area.
