Troopers say a car ran into the back of a mo-ped on a stretch of road where mo-peds are not allowed.
The crash happened at mile marker 72 off Highway 264 in Pitt County. The emergency call came in around 6 a.m. Friday.
Troopers say the driver of a Chevy Malibu ran into the back of a mo-ped, driven by 46-year-old Ligonio T. Hernandez. The driver of the car, Mickey Tripp Jr. of Greenville, is OK. Hernandez was transported to Vidant Medical Center where he died from his injuries Friday afternoon.
Troopers from the Highway Patrol said that section of highway 264 is a controlled access highway, which is illegal for mo-peds to drive on. Troopers said Tripp was driving at least 70mph when he hit Hernandez. The legal speed limit for mo-peds is only 30mph.
"When you start putting vehicles that are so much difference in speed out on these high speed highways, you're creating problem," Trooper Jeff Collins said.
No charges have been filed against the driver of the car. The accident is under investigation.
