The day after an accident, North Carolina Department of Transportation officials change the traffic lighting at a busy Onslow County intersection.
On Monday, a two-car crash left three people seriously injured.
According to the Highway Patrol, the accident happened shortly after 12:45pm at the intersection of Highway 111 and Highway 258, just outside of Jacksonville.
Troopers said a Mustang was traveling North on Highway 258 when the driver made a left turn in front of oncoming traffic. That's when another car hit the passenger side of the Mustang, said Troopers.
Both the driver and passenger in the mustang were airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. Trooper said the driver of the other car was also injured.
On Tuesday, NewsChannel 12 crews observed DOT officials change the lights at the intersection. A left hand green arrow was installed at the light on Highway 258 to turn onto NC 111.
DOT officials said they received numerous complaints from citizens about that intersection. As a result, officials conducted new traffic counts to evaluate the need for a protected left arrow.
New counts showed that a protected green left arrow was needed, and funding was secured for the traffic signal to be revised, said officials. Installation of the new lighting was delayed while DOT officials waited for equipment to be delivered.
Signal revision at the intersection is expected to be complete by the end of the week, weather permitting, said officials.
