A tractor-trailer slammed into a convenience store near Wilson Friday.
It happened along U.S. Highway 301 in Lucama at the Aycock Grill and Gas.
The owner said one of his employees was inside at the time. Two customers were standing just feet away from the spot where the semi slammed into the side of the building.
A kerosene tank and two cars were shoved into the store on impact.
The State Highway Patrol said the driver was headed north on Highway 301 when he apparently veered off the road and smashed into the building.
An eyewitness, who was outside when it happened, saw the entire incident unfold. Jessica Holland said she rushed to help the driver who was pinned inside the truck for about 20 minutes before help arrived.
"He was pinned in. He was responsive to start with and he was hollering back at me, but as far as getting to him, I couldn't check on him," said Holland. "[He was] very shook up, just lucky to be alive is all I know."
The driver's injuries are only minor. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center. His condition is unknown.
The building is a total loss and will have to be demolished.
