A 16-year-old boy and his parents were swept out to sea while trying to save their dog, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The bodies of the two parents were later found, but the teen remained missing.

According to the Coast Guard, the Kuljian family were at Big Lagoon Beach in northern California on Saturday, when their dog was pulled into the water by a 10-foot swell while playing fetch on the beach.      
         
Park officials said 16-year-old Gregory Kuljian and his father, 54-year-old Howard Kuljian, then went into the water to rescue the canine. But Howard got caught in rough waves, prompting his wife, 57-year-old Mary Elena Scott, as well as their son to go after him. Park officials said that was when all three got swept away into the ocean.

The bodies of the two parents were recovered, but their son, Gregory, remained missing. On Monday, Coast Guard members said they called off their search, because there was little chance the teen could have survived in such frigid waters.

The teen's 18-year-old sister, Olivia, was at the beach, and saw her family members get swept away one by one, investigators said. She did not go in the water and was not injured. Rescuers said the family's dog eventually made it back to shore.
