Search suspended for missing ship crew member

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a man who reportedly fell overboard from a merchant ship off the North Carolina coast.

Coast Guardsmen said they worked with the U.S. Navy and searched about 4,430 square miles for more than 10 hours Wednesday. But they said they found no sign of the 33-year-old unidentified crew member.

The man fell from the 478-foot ship, "Ice River," at about 50 miles east of Cape Hatteras, according to the master of the vessel. The call came in at about at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The U.S. Coast Guard deployed a pair of  HC-130 Hercules planes from Air Station Elizabeth City to search for the missing man. A Navy E-2 Hawkeye crew also took part in the operation

The "Ice River" crew has since resumed their voyage to the Panama Canal, according to the Coast Guard.
