Police: Repeat offender arrested for bank robbery
Police arrest a suspect in an Tuesday afternoon bank robbery on Greenville Boulevard. They say he is a long-time repeat offender.
Officers cordoned off the immediate area around the First Citizen's Bank in Greenville Tuesday afternoon and began a search for a bank robber on the run. ECU police officers stopped Robbie Knowles, 36, near the intersection of Berkley Drive and Forest Hill Circle. Knowles was detained for questioning, and police say they recovered cash and a hand-written note from Knowles.
It all started when a call to 911 came in at approximately 2:10 p.m., reporting an armed robbery. The bank is at 1615 S.E. Greenville Boulevard near E.B. Aycock Middle School. By 2:45 p.m., police cars blocked off the exit and entrances to the bank, as teams began to search the area around Greenville Boulevard.
Witnesses reported a man fled the scene on a bike, but were not able to say which direction the individual headed. Police said the man entered the bank, handed an employee a note and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The bank closed for the reminder of the day, with customers blocked from entering the parking lot.
Police say Robbie Knowles is a long-time repeat offender. He has prior arrests for felony larceny, armed robbery, assault, possession of stolen goods and other charges.
