According to investigators, the two brothers were playing with the handgun, found in a bedroom at their Minneapolis townhouse, at about 12:45 p.m., when the 4-year-old shot his younger brother. The toddler died in the ambulance, officers said.
Both of their parents were home at the time, but they told police they did not know how their children got their hands on the weapon. The victim's uncle said the parents usually kept the gun high on a cabinet.
A third brother was home at the time of the shooting, but he wasn't hurt, police said. Neighbors said the fourth brother was at school. The surviving children were in the custody of protective services Wednesday night.
When the investigation is complete, prosecutors will decide if the parents
should be charged with any crime, police said.
The 2-year-old boy's death is the fourth child under the age of six to be accidentally
shot in Minneapolis and St. Paul in the past year.
