People sleeping on steps prompts organization to change procedure
Religious Community Services changes first come, first served to lottery system
NewsChannel12 received an email from a concerned viewer about people sleeping outside the Religious Community Services building, waiting for help.
Executive Director of RCS confirms that was happening. People who are in the process of being evicted or having their utilities cut off can get help with their rent and utility bills. It was based on a first come, first served basis. As a result, some people camped out on cold nights to be first in line.
Wednesday morning, the process was changed.
"We're just trying to treat people as best we can and not have them come out and have to sleep on the steps just to ask for services because we don't think that's the right thing to do," said Michael McMillan, Executive Director of RCS.
The process will have people arrive five to ten minutes before 8AM. Everyone who arrives will be brought in, and their names will be drawn.
