(AP) - North Carolina's public university system is charting a five-year strategy at a time when the state's political leadership is demanding of teaching what's useful for getting a job.
    
The University of North Carolina's Board of Governors is set to vote Friday on a plan that focuses on making the 17-campus system more efficient while increasing the proportion of the state's population with a college degree to nearly one in three. The plan says the universities should invest in high-impact economic sectors like advanced manufacturing, energy, defense, and engineering materials to deliver drugs and diagnostics for humans.
    
Faculty governing bodies at 14 campuses have passed resolutions opposing parts of the plan as professors worry that curriculum decisions could be taken out of their hands by a top-down approach.
