Officials say lightning from Sunday's storms hit an apartment complex, setting it on fire.

It happened at the Liberty Point Apartments on Piney Green Road in Jacksonville, near Highway 24.  Residents say lightning struck the roof of their apartment complex 6:00p.m on Sunday.

Six departments responded the the blaze, including Jacksonville Fire Department, Swansboro Fire Department, and Piney Green Volunteer Fire Department.

Officials say two apartments on the third floor of the complex are a total loss and several others suffered extensive water damage.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Residents tell NewsChannel 12 a group of Marines sprung into action once lightning struck.  The Marines tried to fight off the flames with extinguishers, before going door-to-door ensuring residents evacuated the building.

Rebecca Weaver's husband was one of those Marines.

Weaver lives next door to the apartment that caught on fire.

"My neighbors said lightning just struck our house, and we were like oh my goodness, and my husband runs over there and there's water pouring into the house," said Weaver.

Weaver and her neighbors are staying in different apartments inside the same complex.
