Summer's torrid temperatures will continue to roast North Carolina as a warning is posted for the northeastern corner of the state.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Wednesday for northeastern North Carolina for heat index readings that could approach between 105 and 109 degrees.

Forecasters say the hottest temperatures and highest heat indices will occur between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Prolonged exposure to the heat or any strenuous outdoor activity could lead to heat-related illnesses that may require medical attention.

An air quality alert is also in effect for counties in the Research Triangle, Fayetteville and Rocky Mount areas.
