The New River Inlet Channel Realignment Project has begun on North Topsail Beach. That's according to Mayor Daniel Tuman.
"We're going to pump 600 thousand cubic yards of sand out of the inlet," said Tuman. "It'll make for a more attractive recreational beach, and it will provide protection for the properties that are adjacent to the beach in case of a storm event."
The project will widen and deepen the New River Inlet Channel and the sand from the channel will be placed on the northern 1.7 miles of North Topsail Beach. Tuman said the shoreline is expected to be widened by approximately 180 feet.
The goal of the project is to provide erosion mitigation to homes that are currently threatened, officials said.
Tuman said the project costs $6 million dollars. It is funded by North Topsail taxpayers and also tourists. It is expected to be complete by the end of January at the latest.
