CARTERET COUNTY -

A 12-year-old reported missing on Monday has been found.

FBI officials said that Abigaile Lefevers and Timothy Newman were located in a parking lot a block from Interstate 95 near Miami. She is alive and safe, and authorities told her father that she was taken to the hospital to be checked out. Newman is currently in custody.

An Amber Alert was issued for Lefevers Monday evening. Officials on Tuesday filed a warrant for Newman's arrest. That warrant, which carries a charge of child abduction, was filed through NCIC and NCAWARE.

REPORTED MISSING
Abigaile was last seen by her father at their home on McNeill Road in Newport around 10 p.m. Sunday. When the father awoke Monday morning at approximately 6:25 a.m., he noticed his daughter was missing.

"To think that anybody would take my 12-year-old daughter away from me after her mother passed away last year," Robert Lefevers said.

Abigaile's alleged abductor, Newman, was last seen at approximately 10 p.m. Sunday by his roommate, deputies said.

THE SEARCH
Carteret County deputies said Tuesday that Abigaile and Newman were in Myrtle Beach, SC, and traveling along the coast of South Carolina.

Newman is also said to be a former truck driver, and authorities said if Newman is still traveling, he could be doing so on back roads to avoid any major highways.  Deputies said Newman was driving a red 1998 Chrysler Sebring with North Carolina license number AKT-6534. The car was seen Monday morning on Highway 17, near the South Carolina border. Following reports of the sighting, the search continued south into Florida on Wednesday.

Deputies said Newman has had contact with Abigaile in the past several weeks. Newman is a registered sexual offender.

LOOKING AHEAD
Abigaile's father is in Carteret County. There's been no word if he'll go to Florida to get his daughter, or if she'll be transported back to him. Newman will face charges in North Carolina; there is no word yet if he'll face charges in other states.
