A Jacksonville family who lost three children in a fire will finally move into their new home.
Sammy and Johnetta Pittman's home, located at 2124 Wilmington Highway, caught fire on February 23rd. Three of the couple's eight children - Tabitha Pittman, 12; Elijah Pittman, 8; and Gabriel Pittman, 6 - died of smoke inhalation. The other five children were treated for various injuries and burns.
Volunteer contractors and businesses began building a new home for the family in March. The Onslow County Sheriff's Office said that home is expected to be finished this week. Workers say they are currently putting the final touches on the home.
In a news conference held nearly six weeks after the tragic fire, Sammy Pittman expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the community for their love and support.
Local fire fighters from surrounding counties have installed sprinklers and smoke detectors in the Pittmans' new home.
The Pittman's old home has since been demolished.
