NC team to host July 4 event after Army cancels
The operators of a minor league baseball team in Fayetteville say they will step in to help fill the void left by the U.S. Army's cancellation of an annual July 4th celebration at Fort Bragg.
The Fayetteville Observer reported Friday (http://bit.ly/114vHHt ) that the SwampDogs baseball team will host a family-friendly celebration and fireworks show on July 4th.
The Army announced Thursday that festival was too expensive to put on this year in light of budget cuts triggered by sequestration. Base commander Lt. Gen. Daniel B. Allyn says he needs to prioritize spending at the base in advance of civilian furloughs and other cuts.
Bragg's annual July 4th event had been held for more than 30 years, typically drawing a crowd of more than 50,000 people.
