RALEIGH -

(AP) -The State Board of Education voted Thursday to authorize the schools to open next August. Eight new ones were approved earlier this year and opened for the new academic year.

Schools that gain approval start planning and training for opening day. The state school board has to certify by next spring that they're ready.

Charters are public schools that are often run by nonprofit groups and are allowed to operate with fewer of the regulations that face traditional schools. The state previously had limited the number of charter schools to 100 since the first was established in the 1990s.
