(AP) - A legislative panel will consider changes to make it tougher to manufacture meth, including requiring a prescription for cold remedies containing one of the main ingredients.
    
A House committee is meeting Wednesday to discuss recommendations for the 2013 legislative session, which begins Jan. 30. Among the possibilities is requiring a prescription for cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in making meth.
    
Pharmacies now must enter customers into a national database when they buy cold medicine containing pseudoephedrine. The database blocks the sale if the person has gone on a buying spree for the drug.
    
The committee also will consider increasing penalties for manufacturing meth when children are present.
    
Meth is a potent stimulant that can be cooked up from over-the-counter household products, often leaving behind a toxic mess.
