(AP) - Pat McCrory talked throughout the campaign about how North Carolina was broken and how he wanted to be governor so he could fix the state.
The voters chose him last week, and now the first Republican governor in 20 years has a lot riding on his ability to follow through with his pledge to repair the state.
The former Charlotte mayor has set a few goals already. He wants to reduce income tax rates to levels in surrounding states, lower the unemployment rate and improve customer services for citizens and businesses.
N.C State political scientist Andrew Taylor said Monday that voters will be ready to judge McCrory's performance in the next year or two.
McCrory says he'll fix problems by focusing on big-picture goals and assembling teams to find solutions.
