Marine dead after car crashes into woods

One person was killed Thursday night when their vehicle ran off a highway and into the woods, troopers said.

It happened about 10:45 p.m. along Hwy. 172 in Onslow County's Hubert.

A four-door sedan was going approximately 90 to 100 mph when it left the roadway on the right shoulder and went about 400 feet through the woods before stopping, troopers said.

The name of the victim, a male, has not yet been released pending family notification.

Troopers confirmed the man was a Marine based out of Camp Lejeune.

No one else was involved.

Highway Patrol and military authorities are investigating the wreck.
