Investigators identified the man found dead inside his Pitt County home.
According to the Daily Reflector, deputies discovered the body of 36-year-old Michael Simmons at about noon Wednesday, inside a house on Trails End, near Highway 43, south of Greenville.
Detectives were canvassing the neighborhood because of a recent break-in, when they saw Simmons' body through a window of the home, investigators said.
Simmons had Down Syndrome, and had been living with his parents, said Christy Wallace, spokesperson for the Pitt County Sheriff's Office. But over the past several weeks, he had been staying at the home by himself.
Simmons' parents were in Charleston, South Carolina, but arrived back at the home Wednesday, shortly after the body was found, Wallace said.
A cause of death had not been released.
