Man drags wife to safety during massive house fire
Four fire departments responded to a massive house fire in Bertie County that left an older couple injured, according to fire investigators.
Crews got the call of the fire, on the 1000 block of NC 45 North, near Merry Hill, just before 11:00 p.m. Tuesday. When they got there, they found the single-family home fully engulfed, the dispatch official said.
Mitch Cooper, the director of emergency management, said the husband heard an explosion. When he went looking for his wife, he found her lying on the floor. The man has been identified as Raleigh Baker. Baker dragged his wife, Sue Baker, to safety, according to family members. Both were transported to nearby hospitals.
Cooper said the cause of the fire could be from an oxygen tank that was inside the home, but they are looking at other causes as well. The Bertie County Sheriff's Department was assisting in the investigation.
The Colerain Fire Dept., the Merry Hill-Midway Fire Dept., Perrytown fire Dept. and the Windsor Fire Dept. responded to the scene.
