A man escaped his car right before it erupted in flames, the Highway Patrol said.
Jonathan Castro, 23, was driving on Pittman Road in Swansboro at around 10 p.m. Thursday, Trooper Sean Spring said. Castro heard some popping noises, so he pulled over. That was when his car caught fire.
Castro was not injured, Trooper Spring said, but Castro was driving with a revoked license. But the trooper says Castro was not arrested because his car was destroyed.
Firefighters were able to put out the blaze. The video of the fire was shot by NewsChannel 12 viewer, Michelle Perry.
"We could feel the heat, and we were all excited because we like excitement like that, and I was like praying oh Lord please don't let anyone be in the car," said Perry.
Perry, who lives in Raleigh, was driving to Atlantic Beach for the Fourth Of July Holiday Weekend. She says that's when her nephew, Travis Jones, saw the fire.
"I told my nephew, I said well, we have started our vacation off making memories," said Perry.
Perry and her family members tell us they are grateful no one was injured in the blaze.
