Kinston man charged in teen's shooting death
Lenoir County Sheriff's deputies charged 24-year-old Ezequiel Lopez-Lopez with manslaughter after a shooting Saturday in Kinston.
Deputies responded to a call around 8 p.m. Saturday at the 700 block of Clark Drive. That's where they found 16-year-old Derrick Minton suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen. Minton later died at Lenoir Memorial Hospital.
"I just talked to him a week ago and now he's not here no more," Samuel Guzman, Minton's friend, said. "It's bad."
Deputies believe Lopez had a .380 semi-automatic handgun, and proceeded to hand the gun over to Minton who wanted to see it. At that point, the gun discharged while Lopez was still holding it, shooting Minton.
"I know they were friends, but I don't know what could've happened," Guzman said.
Investigators are still working to determine how exactly the firearm discharged and the circumstances prior to the shooting.
Lopez was taken to the Lenoir County jail, where he was held under $40,000 bond. A first court appearance was held Monday morning.
