The Greenville City Council passed an ordinance Thursday night that will limit where certain tobacco shops can set up for business.
The ordinance means that all new "class two" tobacco shops (those that sell water pipes, hookahs, bowls, water bongs and other smoking apparatuses) would have to be at least 500 feet from a single family home, school, church or park.
In addition, no shop can be opened within half a mile of an existing tobacco store.
The ordinance passed Thursday night will only affect new businesses. Greenville city leaders said they will have another vote on an ordinance that would affect current tobacco shops.
