Fourth internet café robbed in Pitt Co. has business owners worried
Armed robbers targeted yet another internet café in Pitt County, making it the 4th internet café robbed in the last two months, police said.
The latest robbery happened at an internet café on 250 Easy Street in Greenville, at about 11:56 p.m. Sunday, said Sgt. Joe Friday of the Greenville Police Department. Two men, armed with a silver handgun, allegedly entered the business and took cash from the register.
The first suspect was described as a light-skinned black male, who wore black jeans, a white t-shirt, a black flight jacket and Timberland boots, Sgt. Friday said. The second suspect was described as a smaller-built black male, who wore a black hoodie, black jeans and black and white baseball gloves.
Since October, there have been five armed robberies at four Greenville and Winterville-area internet cafés, police said.
Two men with handguns entered the Sweep$t@kes Netcafé Business Center on Stantonsburg Road, at about 12:45 a.m. on Nov. 15, investigators said. The suspects allegedly took more than $1,000 in cash. The same business was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money on Oct. 15 as well.
Carolina Cyber Center #3 in Winterville was robbed at 1:15 a.m. on Nov. 12, police said. In that robbery, two men allegedly entered the business and took more than $2,000 dollars in cash.
On Nov. 7, the Purple Haze Café on Charles Boulevard, just outside Greenville, was robbed, police said. At least $680 in cash were stolen, along with a wallet and debit and gift cards.
“It worries me for my safety, it worries me for my children at home, and it worries me for my employees and customers,” said Connie Langley, owner of Pirates Loot, Inc. in Greenville. The sweepstakes internet café had not been hit, but Langley said her business could be next.
"Of course we're going to be a target because they think we carry a lot of cash, which is a big misconception," Langley said.
Police said they did not know if the robberies were connected, but said it could be a possibility.
