Three men ,including two from Kinston, were arrested for the shooting of a mother and her 8-year-old son in Johnston County.
Former Kinston and Lenoir Community College basketball star, 22-year-old Mister Premier Height, and another Kinston man, 35-Year-Old Cornel Breon Harper, were arrested Thursday. Their alleged accomplice, Sameer Ibn Muhammod Edgar, from Detroit, was also arrested.
The suspects were accused of firing shots through the window of an apartment on Towbridge Drive in Smithfield, about 30 miles southeast of Raleigh Wednesday night. A mother, in her early 20's, along with her 8-year-old son, were shot multiple times. They were taken to a hospital and at last check, both were in serious condition.
Height was charged with 24 counts of accessory after the fact of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling and two counts of accessory after the fact of attempted murder.
"It's heartbreaking and sad," Kinston assistant basketball coach, Keith Sherrod, said. "It really is."
Sherrod coached Height for five years.
"He was a good player very smart," he said. "He was always giving his all. Everything he did he gave his all."
Kinston athletics director, Perry Tyndall, said the charges surprised him.
"This was just extremely out of character for him," Tyndall said. "(The phrase) 'a good kid' gets thrown around a lot, but Mister was truly a good kid."
Harper and Edgar were each charged with 18 counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, six counts of inflicting serious injury with a deadly weapon, and two counts of attempted first degree murder.
Another woman and child were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, but were not hurt. Police said the shooting was not a random act, but were still working to find a motive.
The three suspects were being held in the Johnston County Jail under $2 million bonds each. They were scheduled to appear in court on September 7th.
