Farm tractor driver dies after accident with tractor trailer
Troopers are investigating a deadly crash between a farm tractor and a tractor trailer on Highway US 64 in Martin County.
Investigating Trooper Brian Allen, said the driver of the farm tractor, Henry Kornegay Jr., 59, of Ayden, died of complications sustained in the accident.
Authorities said they got the call at 10:15 Monday morning.
Allen said the tractor trailer was traveling westbound on US 64 when it collided with the farm tractor carrying a bush hog which was also traveling westbound.
Officials said the tractor trailer, driven by 35-year-old Curtis Benard Jacobs, of Fairmont, was going 65 miles per hour when it rear-ended the farm tractor.
Allen said the farm tractor, owned by Precision Lawn Care Commercial and Residential, broke into two pieces and Kornegay was thrown from the farm tractor.
The Nash Finch Company tractor trailer then went off the road to the right. Jacobs had minor injuries. Troopers said he was taken to an area hospital but was later released with a broken wrist.
Kornegay, on the other hand, had severe injuries from the crash. He was taken to Martin General Hospital before being transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. Authorities said he passed away a few hours after the crash.
Jacobs was charged with reckless driving and DWI, for being under the influence of prescription medication. Authorities said Jacobs told them he took Lorazapan, a medication that is prescribed to him, before he started work for the day.
Trooper Allen said they are waiting on blood work to determine exactly how many pills Jacobs took.
