(AP) - A veteran of the war in Iraq who says she was misclassified as an out-of-state resident when she applied to a North Carolina college is trying to compel the UNC system to change the way it treats student veterans.
    
Hayleigh Perez on Thursday delivered a petition containing 145,000 signatures to the UNC Board of Governors.
    
The 26-year-old Perez wanted to use her GI Bill to attend a UNC school to earn a master's degree. Perez says she was told she didn't qualify as a state resident when she applied to UNC Pembroke because she moved to Texas with her husband, who was serving active duty there. The couple was paying a mortgage and taxes on their home in Raeford.
    
Perez now attends Methodist University, a private school in Fayetteville.
