ECU police plan to ramp up security at spring football game
Police will have additional patrolling officers on hand for the annual “Pig Skin, Pig Out” event.
Officials said the festivities begin at 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon and run through the weekend.
Last year, there was a crowd of 7,100 people and authorities expect a similar number this year.
The “pig out” event starts Friday night with a cook-off between local cooks.
Then, on Saturday there’s the spring football scrimmage at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $5.00 per person; however, if you buy a barbeque plate for $10.00 admission is free.
Lt. Chris Sutton said in light of what happened at the Boston Marathon on Monday, ECU police are stepping up security with extra officers inside the stadium and outside to patrol the carnival.
“We will have a command post that will give us an opportunity to should a need arise for an emergency situation where we can contact local fire resources or law enforcement agencies,” Sutton said.
Police are asking patrons to be on the lookout for anything suspicious. They hope the community will alert them if they see something that appears out of place.
Students we spoke with have mixed opinions about the event.
“No, I will not be attending...There’s a lot going on in the news with populated places being targeted for terrorism. I don't know if you can call it terrorism at this point. I don't trust it,” John Reese, an ECU junior said.
“Nah, I love big crowds. That's what I deal with. My business runs through large crowds. But there's always going to be scariness but you know,” DJ K-Ro, an ECU junior said.
Sutton said while they don't anticipate any problems, it's better to be safe than sorry.
“For us, just like at football games, um a good fan experience isn't complete without a safe environment. So, that's our goal for every event that we have,” Sutton said.
Authorities said for the first time, police will have an officer monitoring the security cameras during the event. Also, officers in the stadium will be wearing the eye-glass cameras to get a better perspective on what's going on in the stands.
