A North Carolina teen, who ran away from home in late November, was found safe in Nevada, and the Pitt County man she was with was arrested, deputies said.
Shelby Kelly, 14, of Vance County, north of Raleigh, was discovered on Jan. 3 in the company of 49-year-old Jerry S. Coburn, of Ayden, said Lt. Joey Ferguson of the Vance County Sheriff's Office. The pair was found in Churchill County, Nevada, allegedly using a vehicle that had been stolen from a home in Emerald Isle in December. The car's North Carolina license plates had been replaced with Arizona plates, and Kelly had cut and dyed her hair, Lt. Ferguson said.
Kelly ran away from her Vance County home on Nov. 26, 2012, Lt. Ferguson said. Arrangements were being made to bring the teen back to North Carolina.
Coburn was arrested on a fugitive warrant. He was charged with felonious restraint and contributing to the delinquency of a minor from a prior Vance County incident, as well as forgery and uttering charges from the Ayden Police Department in Pitt County. Coburn was facing additional charges in both Vance County and Emerald Isle after his extradition to North Carolina.
