Martin County deputies are on the case of human remains found in local woods.
Authorities learned Friday afternoon of a human skeleton about two miles down an unmarked path off of Wild Cat Rd., near Williamston.
Dr. Megan Perry, Associate Professor of Anthropology at ECU and her team helped deputies excavate the remains Saturday morning from 9:30am until 1p.m. Dr. Perry works as the Pott County Medical Examiner's Consultant and will assist in the examination of the body.
Dr. Perry said it is too early to determine to age of the body or how long the body was left in the woods.
The woods are on private property; investigators reached the scene on all-terrain vehicles.
Deputies would not release the gender, age range of the remains or where the family is from.
