An argument between two brothers ended with one of the men dead and the other charged with his murder, according to deputies.
Benjamin Adonis Thomas, of 511 N. Queen St. in Kinston, was arguing with his brother Richard Saturday morning, deputies said.
The two were driving in the La Grange area as the argument wore on, deputies said.
The car stopped at 2572 New Hope Road, where the argument continued and 34-year-old Benjamin shot Richard, according to deputies.
Richard, 28, got out of the car, walked several steps, and collapsed in the yard.
Marcus Dixon, 26, said he has been friends with the brothers for eight years.
He was driving the brothers in his car before the feud broke out.
"We were just in the car chilling, then they started fussing and stuff just escaladed from there,” said Dixon. “He just got mad at him and started shooting him."
Dixon said the feud was started over a text message. He said when the parked the car at his home, things quickly took a turn for the worse.
"I didn't know what to think it just happened so fast,” said Dixon.
According to Dixon, Richard was sitting in the front seat when he was shot. Dixon said he doesn’t know exactly what was in the text that sparked the argument.
Deputies got the call shortly after 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Lenoir County deputies found Benjamin walking down a road in Lenoir County.
The brothers lived together at the North Queen Street address, deputies said.
Benjamin is charged with murder, and is in jail in Wayne County without bond.
Deputies said they found the murder weapon on the side of a ditch on Old Jason Road in Wayne County.
