PITT COUNTY -

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has begun bridge replacement in Grimesland after recent storm damage.

DOT crews will clear off debris and cut back fallen trees from bridge and replace broken railings. Crews will also repair a pipe scheduled before the storm.

During construction Grimesland Bridge Road will be closed.

Drivers traveling north will detour to Carrow Rd. to Hodges, to Dixon Rd back to Grimesland Bridge Road. Drivers traveling south will detour to Dixon Road, to Hodges Rd, to Carrow Rd. then back to Grimesland Bride Road. The detour is approximately 21 miles.

Resident Walter Jackson lives near the detour and said most residents won't mind the long distance detour if that means Grimesland will finally be cleaned up.

"It's not going to bother anybody is Grimesland much because most people use 264 or 33 to get to Greenville, " Jackson said.

The bridge replacement will be complete July 23rd.
