Craven County Schools may not have modified calendar planned for next year
The modified calendar for Craven County Schools is an issue that has caused much debate since the idea was announced earlier this year.
The school board wants to combine all traditional, year-round and early college schools on a single modified calendar for the next school year.
Although, the new calendar may not be ready to go into effect for the 2013 - 2014 school year.
North Carolina Representative Michael Speciale said he supports the modified calendar and believes in giving authority back to the local school boards
"The chances of the bill getting out of committee and getting passed by the House and the Senate is in the next 15 days is slim to none," said Representative Speciale.
Parent Christy MacLarid believes officials should use this extra time to see how parents feel about the new schedule.
"I think this just kind of sprung up on a lot of people and i don't think a lot of people realize how much it's going to affect so many people in Craven County Schools," said MacLarid
Middleton Hinckley has two children that attend Bangert Elementary School. She said she hopes the schools switch to the new calendar.
“I want to know sooner rather than later because I know my family is already looking into summer vacation plans," said Hinckley.
Although this modified calendar may not be available for the next school year, Craven County Board of Education Chairman Carr Ipock said, they will continue to work on the calendar for the 2014 – 2015 school year.
Ipock said the board believes the modified calendar is the best option for Craven County Schools.
“Know that it is coming. We will work very hard to see that it does happen but it does look like at this time it will be delayed by one year," said Ipock.
He said the latest deadline for the modified calendar is March 15th because the school system would need to give teachers and schools enough time to prepare for the change.
