Couple kayaking to Key West visits NC coast
Dave and Amy Freeman have traveled a long way to get here.
But "here" isn't their final destination.
The Minnesota couple is on the last 1,500 miles of their trek across North America, as they make a stop for supplies in Surf City on a cold, windy and rainy day.
The Freemans began their North American Odyssey on Earth Day 2010 in northern Washington, as they kayaked through British Columbia to Alaska. "And then we traveled by canoe and dogsled from there up to the Arctic Ocean," said Dave Freeman.
Following their icy escapade, the pair paddled their way to the Great Lakes, through the St. Lawrence Seaway, up to Maine and eventually to the Intracoastal Waterway. They expect to arrive in Key West, Fla. by April.
But it's not just for the adventure. The Freemans run The Wilderness Classroom, an interactive, educational experience, with more than 60,000 students following their journey across the continent.
On their website, they document their travels with pictures, video and journal entries. Since arriving in North Carolina about two weeks ago they've encountered a variety of wildlife including migratory birds and dolphins in Bogue Sound.
