This is one of those man bites dog stories, literally.
A man wanted in connection with a weekend shooting and trying to elude arrest took a chunk out of the ear of a police dog in a tussle during his arrest, according to police reports.
Police in Wilmington on Sunday arrested 22-year-old Travis Keith Glaspie, who now faces charges in connection with that shooting as well as the assault on the K-9 officer.
Glaspie was wanted in connection with a shooting, and a foot chase started when police approached the suspect to make an arrest.
Wilmington Police Department K-9 Maxx was dispatched during the chase. The dog caught the suspect, who bit the dog’s ear tearing it so severely that stitches were required to repair it, police said.
Police were trying to arrest Glaspie because, based on witness statements, they believed him to be the man on a bicycle Friday night who fired two rounds into an occupied vehicle.
Glaspie is charged with felony assault on a law enforcement animal, resisting arrest, assault on a law enforcement officer, property damage and possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance. His bond was set at over $1 million.
During the struggle, Maxx also inflicted some damage on the suspect. Glaspie was treated for dog bites and released from New Hanover Regional before his booking.
The K-9 was taken to a veterinary office, where he was patched up. The image below shows the injury that Maxx sustained.
