The New Bern Riverfront Convention Center is ready to open, again.
The building shutdown two months ago due to a floor that was sinking into the soil. The ground under the building wasn't strong enough to hold it. It sank five inches in the deepest area, creating cracks and visibly uneven floors.
Contractors fixed the problem and made the floor level. The inside has new carpeting among its many upgrades. Downtown New Bern business owners are ready for the center to start bringing visitors to the area.
"Part of the pleasure of being a business in downtown is to greet all of the visitors who frequent our convention center," Greg Smith said. Smith owns Mitchell's Hardware, just a couple of blocks from the convention center.
The convention center closed on June 24th. The first event is schedule for August the 23rd. It's a New Bern Chamber Business Expo.
