The Pigskin Pig-Out cooking competition is set to kick off at East Carolina University’s Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium for Saturday's spring football game.
"[It's to] show everyone what the Pirate Club and ECU athletics and the Pirates are all about," said Michael Weller, co-manager of Pigskin Pig-Out.
Participants were already setting up for the contest at about noon on Friday. One contestant said the competition will get pretty heated.
"We ain't quitting until we get first. I mean come on, what are you here to shoot for," the contestant said.
Bu Mother Nature could be sending some nasty weather their way.
"Unfortunately, with an outdoor venue for the football game and the cooking and eating of barbeque, there's not too many contingencies that we can set up for that," said Weller.
Contestants came prepared with tents to try to shield themselves from the weather. But that’s not the only thing the tents are protecting them from.
"Well, you got to have a tent. Everybody that's serious has a tent,” said Don Taylor of Road Hogs in Wilson. “You know, you don't want people seeing the secret stuff you do to your pig."
But with all the time spent preparing their pigs, it can be hard to have enough energy to watch the big game.
"You're dead. You're up all night, I mean you're dead [on Saturday]," said Taylor.
The judges will taste all the pigs before announcing a winner. The victors will take home a $500 prize.
Friday night’s festivities include the Pig-Out Carnival and the Parade of Pigs, which starts at 9 p.m.
ECU’s spring football game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
