Camp Vandemere, a hurricane struck church camp in Pamlico County, is planning a recovery effort a year and a half after Irene destroyed several of the camp's buildings.
Two dorm buildings were destroyed during the hurricane. Since then, the camp hasn't been able to host retreats for kids. Rick Price remembers the aftermath of the hurricane.
"It was a site to see that morning we came back," Price said. "Everything we had was strewn from this building here back to the water."
Clothes and church supplies scattered the yard. Price was able to save the camps flag by taking it down before the storm hit. Price said the flooding was just below 6 feet high.
"The effect of the buildings being gone. We've just about stopped," Price said.
Price said before the storm, the camp would run 44 weekend retreats as well as 10 summer camps.
