Chain-reaction crash kills ECU student
An ECU student died Saturday in a multi-vehicle wreck; the victim survived the initial accident but then two other vehicles hit him, according to the investigating trooper.
Robert Steven Barone Perez, 20, was driving east on Highway 264 at about 5:15 a.m. when he ran off the road to the left, hit the median, and his car stopped in the westbound lanes, the trooper said.
A Chevrolet SUV then hit Perez when he was trying to get out of his car or shortly thereafter, it's unclear which, the trooper said.
Perez landed back on the road, when a passenger car hit him, the trooper said.
Perez died at the hospital.
There were no other serious injuries and no charges are pending.
It's unclear what caused Perez' car to initially run off the road; alcohol is not considered a factor at this point in the investigation, the trooper said.
Perez was from Centreville, Va., and was a sophomore at ECU, according to Facebook.
The initial investigation shows that Perez was driving back to his residence after visiting someone in the Raleigh area, troopers said.
