Brown wins NC House District 9 over McLawhorn
Newcomer Republican Brian Brown defeated seven term incumbent Marian McLawhorn for the district 9 seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives.
District 9 represents Pitt County.
Brown said he's looking forward to getting things done in Raleigh.
"It feels really good. I think it's starting to sink in. I'm ready to get to work," he said.
Despite never having served in a political office, Brown believes it was his small business experience and being the father of a 3-year-old that connected with people in the county.
"I think it resonated with voters and that's really what took the win for us," Brown said.
Brown grew up in the Buckeye state and met his wife in college. They moved to Greenville area 8 years ago and haven't looked back since.
Brown said a set-back in his catering business due to the economy is the reason he decided to step up and be a voice for small business owners in our state.
"I've always kinda had my nose a little too far into politics on that side. Always been very involved and engaged in it...and when the opportunity rose we said the cost of not doing this is much higher than the cost of doing it. And we just really [knew] that somebody needs a voice for somebody who lives right now. Someone who is managing employees," he said.
Brown said the first thing he plans to work on when he goes to Raleigh in January is getting Pitt County residents more jobs.
"I'm not going to go there and play party politics. I'm going to go there with that youthful energy and stand up for what's right for Pitt County," he said.
