JACKSONVILLE -

Jacksonville Police say the 58-year-old man who was hit by a car while riding a bike has died.

The man, identified as David Boyd, was riding his recumbent bike on Hargett Street, near the intersection of York Street in Jacksonville, when the car hit him just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, investigators said. Boyd was heading home from the grocery store when the crash happened, and he was pinned underneath the car.

"I'm very sad, Mr. Dave and I were real good friends," said neighbor Curtis Johnson.  Johnson witnessed the aftermath of the crash, and called 911.

"It just hurt me so bad to know that my friend was underneath a car," said Johnson, "pinned underneath a car like that."

Investigators said Boyd was struck just a few feet away from his home.  "He had just bought some groceries," said Johnson.  "He was bringing them home, he didn't make it.

Troy W. Humphrey, Jr., 89, was driving the Toyota SUV that hit Boyd, police said. Humphrey was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

Johnson said friends worried about Boyd.  "He was legally blind but from my understanding he could see somewhat out of his right eye," said Johnson.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and no further information can be released at this time. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Traffic Supervisor Lieutenant Sean Magill at
