BEULAVILLE, DUPLIN COUNTY -

A man, accused of shooting and killing another man in Beulaville in early February, was released on bond.

Max Turner, 52, is charged with murder, for allegedly killing 51-year-old Jamie Fountain. On Friday, Turner was released on bond, set at $750,000. But he must be on 24/7 house arrest, have no contact with the victim's family or social media, and must not be around firearms, investigators said.

According to police, Turner shot Fountain in the heart on Feb. 5. The murder happened in front a florist shop, located off West Bostic Street, just before 8 p.m., said Beulaville Police Chief Joey Carter. The scene is behind the BB&T bank.

Officers said they found Fountain's body inside a blue Chevy Tahoe SUV that belonged to the shooter's wife.

According to Chief Carter, Turner's wife was in the driver's seat of her SUV, and Fountain was in the front passenger's seat when he was shot. But Fountain's body was found in the back seat, and investigators are unsure when or why the body was moved.

During a previous bond hearing, District Attorney Ernie Lee said there was evidence of premeditation.

But Turner's attorney said his client killed Fountain out of love for his wife and not hatred for the victim, acknowledging an affair between Fountain and Turner's wife, Lisa.

Fountain's uncle, Sherwood Fountain, said he knew nothing of an affair between his nephew and the alleged shooter's wife. Instead, he said he remembers his nephew for his kindness and generosity.

"He was there when I needed him," said Sherwood.  "He would do anything in the world for me, and I just can't believe this has happened."

Fountain's funeral was on Feb. 10, at the Serenity Funeral Home in Beulaville. He was buried at Hosea Fountain Cemetery.

Fountain is survived by his son, in his twenties from a previous marriage, mother, and three sisters.
