WASHINGTON -

Beaufort County Sheriff Alan Jordan announced last week his plans to retire at the end of his fourth term next year.

Jordan has worked with the department since 1987.

He told NewsChannel 12 his wife has been battling an illness for many years, and he wants to spend more time with her. He said he also feels like it's his time to leave.

"As good as I love being Sheriff and it's just been a wonderful honor and experience. It's is a 24/7 job. No matter where you are or what you are doing, the first thing on your mind is what's going on in regards to the Sheriff's Office," Jordan said.

Jordan said he is endorsing Captain Russell Davenport as his replacement. The pair have worked together in the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office for many years.

While Jordan is stepping down from his position as Sheriff in 2014, he doesn't plan to leave law enforcement all together. Jordan said he hopes to continue to help out the department in some capacity if he is able.
